Paris Chronicles Day 4
I think it was the night before when I made a small wager about the next day. I bet that we will meet Jaime at Starbuck’s. He’ll be wearing a black long-sleeved T-shirt, with a short sleeved T-shirt over that. He’ll be in jeans with the chain that holds his wallet hanging at his side. He’ll be shaved, with his curly hair blowing in the wind and his sunglasses hanging from the neck of his shirt. We have video proof of what happens.
We’re all up and ready when Fatima’s cell phone rings. It’s Claudia, Jaime’s assistant. They talk a bit and Fatima hands me the phone. Claudia says, “What’s up, Esme?” Jaime told me that we’re meeting at the Odeon Starbucks.” I was laughing as I repeated, “The Odeon Starbucks.” Everyone hears and starts laughing too. It just couldn’t be any other place. We arrange to meet there at 12 noon.
We’re at Odeon Starbuck’s at noon, not in the least nervous, just tired. We go into a “Women’s Secret” store to pass the time since Jaime and Claudia weren’t there yet. It’s almost 12:15 and Jaime and Claudia aren’t there yet. It’s strange that Jaime is late, he’s always so punctual. We are about to find out why they’re late.
We see Jaime and Claudia, he apologizes for being late, but they came on the Metro and Claudia had to check them out of the hotel. After our customary hugs and kisses, we borrow some seats and sit out on the little terrace. Needless to say I won my bet; I was right on, hair and wardrobe both. HA HA.
Jaime asks what we want, since he and Claudia are ordering for us all. Jaime says, “Croissant, muffin, sandwich?” I say, “Don’t try to bribe me, not even with a double chocolate muffin.” Jaime says, “I’ll have a Chai, I like them a lot. They have cold or hot; I take mine cold.” We all decide to have the same, except Fatima wants her Chai with soy milk. Jaime goes to make the order, leaving us all chatting. After a couple of minutes, Jaime comes back and says, “Esme, could you come help me with the order?” I start to get up, saying we all want a cold Chai, except for Fatima who wants soy milk. Jaime says, “OK, I got it.” He goes back to make the order and we just let him go alone.
Claudia and Jaime come back carrying all our drinks and some stuff for breakfast. Once we all have our drinks we begin our interview. We talk about the movie, about when Jaime did “Operacion Triunfo,” and about how it went with his Spanish producers. We just talk about this and that, silly stuff, important stuff. At one point, I do get serious and ask the questions for our official interview for the Club.
We have a really great time until about 2:15 when Jaime tells us he’s sorry he has to leave, but he needs to find some Newman pants his Father asked him to buy. He’s already looked all over and he’s getting desperate to find them.
We say goodbye with hugs and kisses, Jaime takes that opportunity to whisper in my ear his gratitude for organizing everything. He says we can come to Mexico anytime, that we’ve won his heart. We say our goodbyes, just like old friends, just like we’ll see each other again soon.
We go sightseeing again, seeing all the places, people and the atmosphere that is uniquely Paris: the bakeries with the aroma of fresh baked croissants, the beautiful monuments.
